In recent
years, women in their 20s, 30s and even 40s are triggered with
outbreaks of acne.
Nearly 5% of women over 40 suffer from acne.
Without help, some women have continuing problems until they
reach menopause.
Young women are more likely to have acne due to
hormonal changes associated with their menstrual cycle,
pregnancy or starting and stopping of birth control pills.
Hormonal changes in adolescent girls and woman starts 2 to 7
days before their menstrual period which is due to elimination
of estrogen.
Oral contraceptives which are low in estrogen have
little effect on acne but progesterone – only pills
can make acne worse.
Some women’s acne virtually disappears during pregnancy but
often recurs at the end while for others pregnancy heralds the
reactivation of acne or worsening of an existing condition.
Tip: Those who are pregnant
must be extremely
cautious before using any type of product,
either orally or topically.
